Consider the following... In 2012, EA published Mass Effect 3. The multiplayer was loosely integrated into the singleplayer, and to do better in multiplayer, you had to earn, or spend real money on in-game Credits to buy lootboxes that held better gear. I ran the math a couple years ago, and in order to unlock everything, assuming perfect RNG, with no duplicates, and no lootboxes with useless items like more revive packs, or ammo packs- you can infinitely revive teammates, and ammo boxes are scattered on every map, fully refilling your ammo- which you can't even bring all that you have into the matches, but rather are bound to a default of 5, maximum of 9, it would take you a little under 42 years of playtime in Gold (the hardest difficulty at launch) matches. This doesn't account for load screens, eating, sleeping, bathroom or any sort of breaks. If you played 24/7 365.25, nonstop, the absolute earliest you could hope to unlock everything would be 2055, assuming you have no issues finding players to play with / can solo every match, and have the fastest possible match launches and shortest possible load screens. Fast-forward to 2017, and EA publishes Star Wars Battlefront EA 2, a game riddled with lootboxes as the only way to progress through multiplayer. If everyone just accepted it because, "Welcome to the club. EA''s been doing this with Mass Effect for years..." then BFEA2 wouldn't have changed, there would have been no pushback from all sides against lootboxes now that Star Wars was involved, and the gaming industry would be a lot more overmonetized today. Let's take it a step beyond. Strauss Zeldnick put forth the idea of charging players by how long they play the game, and whoever's running EA mentioned charging FPS players per magazine of ammo. "Welcome to the club. Arcades did this with their cabinets for decades," so there's nothing of paying by the hour, or by the mag pull, right?
